DIY Trick: Mayo as a Dry Scalp Treatment!
If your scalp gets flaky and itchy in the winter, don’t worry! This is common. You may not need to switch to a dandruff shampoo – the culprit could just be dry scalp. In fact, dandruff shampoo can make dry scalp worse! So what do you do? Kathryn suffers from dry scalp, particularly in the cold, windy months, and recently discovered an unconventional little deep conditioning treatment that actually works: MAYONNAISE.
Mayo is pretty much just oil, eggs and vinegar. The oils help soothe and restore moisture to the scalp, and high-protein eggs are great for your hair. Vinegar will also the help to kill any bacteria or fungus that might be affecting your scalp – these can cause dryness and the oh-so-dreaded itch. Yuck.
All you need is:
Mayo. Kat used Hellman’s but any brand will do as long as it contains cholesterol. This will indicate it has egg yolks and the right kind of oils that will make the treatment worthwhile.
A towel or an old t-shirt
A shower cap.
Step 1
Before applying the mayo, wrap a towel around yourself or put on an old tee. The oils in mayo can stain your clothes and Kat learned this the hard way!
Step 2
Coat your scalp in mayo. It helps to do this one section at a time. NOTE: You can put the mayo all over your hair from roots to tips if you want–it’s certainly good for it–but be forewarned it can be very hard to rinse out. Kat prefers to just do her scalp since that’s where she feels the greatest benefit...and she doesn’t feel like washing her hair 2 or 3 times.
Step 3
Massage the mayo into your scalp.
Step 4
Wait 30 minutes or more.
Step 5
Wash and condition. You may have to use a little more shampoo than usual to make sure all the oils are out of your hair. Tip: Do you massage your conditioner into your scalp? Start doing this! Regular conditioning is an important step in keeping the scalp hydrated and preventing itching. We love Pai Shau Replenishing Cleanser and Conditioner. The whole line is tea-infused, so it soothes the scalp and doesn’t weigh down your hair or leave it greasy.
Step 6
Air dry. Putting heat on the scalp causes dryness and irritation. You’ll see the best results from this treatment if you let it dry at room temp.
